Obiri and Sharon Lokedi came into the race just a few months after a decent showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The latter missed a podium place just by a whisker as Obiri took bronze.
Obiri was hoping to follow up on her success on the same course last year. She won the Boston Marathon in 2022 and 2023.

Obiri was hoping to follow up on her success on the same course last year. She won the Boston Marathon in 2022 and 2023.
The race was off to a slow start, with Obiri using 18:18 for the first 5K before dropping a 17:06 for the next 5K split.
The pace dropped further at the halfway mark, with the leading group crossing at 1:13:59. Vivian Cheruyiot, who was returning since 2020, twice hit the front as she sought to roll back the years that saw her achieve widespread success on the track.
Obiri, Cheruyiot, and Chepkirui took charge of the race with 5K remaining. Obiri did not have the final kick many expected, with Chepkirui surging in front to cross the line in 2:24:35.
Abdi Nageeye holds off Evans Chebet
In the men's race, Tamirat Tola came into this as the newly minted Olympic champion after a brilliant run in Paris in August. The Ethiopian was up against a formidable field that included two-time New York champion Geoffrey Kamworor and three-time World Marathon Majors winner Evans Chebet, among others.
American Elkanah Kibet led them through the 10K mark at 31:37 with at least 15 men within five seconds of each other.
At the 24K mark, Frank Lara made the first serious move of the game, injecting pace to put some daylight between him and the chasing pack, but he was quickly closed down.
Chebet then took charge of the race at the 25K mark to split the huge lead pack. Kamworor and Tola remained with him as the pack was trimmed down to seven athletes.
Chebet, Kamworor, and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Abdi Nageeye hit the front at the 35K mark, dropping the defending champion Tola. Chebet tried to inject his characteristic pace, but Nageeye went through with him, setting up a sprint finish.
Nageeye, however, shook off Chebet to win his first major with a time of 2:07:39. Chebet was second, while Albert Korir beat Tola to third place.
